POSITION: Cafe Assistant
The role of the Cafe Assistant is to create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for all customers, participants, and staff. This involves preparing fresh food and drinks in a cafe setting, while maintaining a high standard of service and customer care with a friendly and polite attitude.
The cafe assistant is responsible for the cafe’s day-to-day operation, including customer service, food preparation, receiving and stocking, and cafe maintenance.
The cafe is a social enterprise and the cafe assistant is also responsible for implementing person-focused services under the direction of the Instructor and Executive Director.
Participants in the cafe are taught the skills to prep, cook, and store foods safely, provide a positive customer experience, handle basic cash transactions, and track inventory. These skills are easily transferable to the home and the community and serve to further participant independence.
This is a full-time permanent position. A comprehensive benefits package is available, including: Health and Dental, Pension, and Vacation.
Wage: $19.00- $22.00
Cafe hours are primarily Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:00pm, but may include some evening and weekend hours.
Key Responsibilities:
Customer Service
Ability to work with people considered to have an intellectual disability, while fostering good relations.
Use effective customer care skills to ensure the well-being of customers at all times.
Ensure and maintain good customer relations.
Ensure high levels of safety and hygiene are maintained throughout the cafe.
Report any issues that could affect the smooth operations of the cafe to the instructor.
Food and Beverage Preparation
Prepare food and beverages in line with Food Hygiene, Health and Safety Standards.
Ensure that food and beverage preparation is of high quality to meet customer expectations.
Work with the instructor to develop a menu.
Prepare and serve hot and cold drinks to specified standards.
Prepare and serve muffins, pastries, sandwiches, and other food as requested to recipe standards.
Clean all equipment after use according to industry standards.
Monitoring Stock
Receive and store stock, ensuring accurate documentation.
Shelves/fridges should be fully stocked with items available and must be replenished throughout the day, particularly after peak times.
Adhere to stock rotation at all times so that stock with the earliest sell-by date is at the front/on top of shelves.
Report any stocks that are running low to the instructor.
Discuss any requests or suggestions for new stock items with the team.
Checks to Monitor
Take temperature checks of the freezers/fridges and record findings on the sheet. Any faults should be reported to the instructor.
Staff should promptly inform their instructor if they are running low on change in the till.
All staff should ensure accurate cash handling. Any issues should be reported to the instructor.
Cleaning
Prepare the cafe for opening and ensure that service and seating areas are cleaned before use.
Maintain cleanliness to align with industry standards.
Clean tables, chairs, worktops, and the floor after peak times to maintain a high level of cleanliness in the cafe.
Training
The Cafe Assistant will be required to undergo training relevant to the responsibilities above or related duties.
Working for CCOA
The Cafe Assistant will be required to:
Comply with CCOA policies and procedures.
Immediately report concerns to the CCOA instructor.
Treat all sensitive information regarding participants, employees, and the business of CCOA as confidential.
Ensure professional and respectful interactions with participants, customers, and staff.
Uphold responsibilities relating to Health, Safety, and the Environment.
Personal Competencies and Qualities
Excellent communication skills and customer service skills.
Experience working in a commercial kitchen and in a similar customer-facing environment is preferred.
Knowledge and experience with excellent food preparation skills.
Ability to work well under pressure with high customer traffic.
Taking initiative and working well independently.
Attention to detail while ensuring quality assurance.
Flexible and able to work well within a team.

Other Requirements
This role is physically demanding and requires the employee to be in good overall health.
Ability to perform all physical duties of the job which will require long periods of time standing and the ability to lift up to 30lbs.
A valid Nova Scotia driver’s license and a clear driver’s abstract are required.
Criminal records and vulnerable sector checks are required.
Nova Scotia Food Handlers/Food Safety Certificate will be required.

POSITION: Casual Residential Support Worker

About Us
Lantz Residential Programs is a not-for-profit organization that operates three small option homes and an ILS program in the East Hants area, offering varying levels of support.
Purpose of These Positions
The Independent Living Support Program supports adults living with an intellectual disability. It is a community based, person-directed initiative designed for adults to promote independence in the areas of daily living, such as maintaining a household, laundry, shopping, and baking, preparing meals, transportation for community access, recreational, leisure, volunteer, and work activities. Support Workers create person-directed programs that offer positive and meaningful experiences enabling participants to explore and learn within their environment and community. The ILS program is committed to enhancing the quality of life by foster independence.
Residential Support Workers are responsible for supporting adults living with an intellectual disability in their day to day lives in a small option home setting. Support will include life skills, personal care, assisting with daily activities, assisting people to participate in various community activities, and household management. Positive behavioural and communications support are essential to this role.

Valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License with a clean driver’s abstract, and reliable transportation. In the ILS program, SEF 6a insurance may be required to get reimbursed for mileage.
Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector check required.
Qualifications
Completion of a community college or university program in human services, disability support, or equivalent.
Work or Volunteer experience supporting individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities.
Completion of the 7 Core Competency training required by the Department of Opportunities and Social Development or willing to complete training.
Standard First Aid/CPR, Food Safety, Fire and Life Safety, Medication Awareness, Crisis Intervention, Behaviour Support, Health and Personal Care, and Individualized Planning.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently or as part of a team under the direction of the Supervisor, Executive Director, or Designate.
Compensation
$22.00 - $26.31 per hour, depending on experience.
